Meet Your Maker: Hen Pen Paper Co.
Posted on September 04 2015
This week we welcome local stationer Lara of Hen Pen Paper Co. to the Meet Your Maker series! We were excited to add Lara's line of whimsical and irreverent cards to the shop last fall and each release this year has gotten better and better. Hen Pen is one of our best selling card lines and you'll love seeing the full collection in one place. Stock up for all your upcoming birthdays, anniversaries, baby showers, and more. And meet Lara in person Saturday, September 5th from 9am-12pm during the Clintonville Farmers' Market.
Here's a little more about Lara and Hen Pen Paper Company:
Let’s start with an easy one: What do you make?
Hi, I’m Lara Henning & I’m the designer/illustrator/owner of Hen Pen Paper Co. I make greeting cards and other paper goods! My husband, Brian, has joined me in my venture and helps with all the behind-the-scenes business stuff and also helping to chase our 2 year old daughter around.
This is what we like to tell people about our business:
Hen Pen Paper Co. LLC is a Columbus, Ohio paper goods company providing sweet, witty and straight-forward greeting cards, all printed in USA and carefully assembled in their studio by husband and wife team, Lara and Brian Henning. The modern illustrations and hand lettering created by Lara has captured the hearts of not only stationery lovers but also those that once regarded the handwritten card as old-fashioned.
How did you get started making your current line of products? Why did you decide to make it a business?
Long story, well long… I hated my corporate design job. I quit to do freelancing and since most of my friends were planning weddings, I began designing a lot of wedding related paper goods.
In 2011, while I was still enjoying invitation design, I decided to branch even further into stationery by designing my own greeting cards. I wanted to express my more playful, witty side of my artistic abilities (but simply for fun at this point!). I decided to post them onto Etsy. Within 2 weeks of posting, Etsy tweeted them out & posted to facebook a few of my cards (I only had 6 at this point!). This was the turning point that encouraged us to focus our efforts on our greeting cards only.
What do you like to do in your non-crafting time?
Well, I stared at this question for 10 minutes. I’m always crafting, designing, sketching, and brainstorming, haha! However, my family is and always will be number 1! My husband and 2 year old daughter come before everything and are my inspiration for everything I do. I love planning trips with them and enjoying just being in the moment.
What’s your favorite thing about Clintonville? (outside of Wholly Craft of course, haha!)
There are fun shops, cool people, and a great community. I ask myself every day why the hell I haven’t moved to Clintonville yet. You can have chickens there, right? If so, I’m in.
(Editor's Note: dude, you can totally have chickens in Clintonville! The more the merrier)
